Locojoy Games title Mystic Castle now available from Google Play

If you’re looking for a text-based RPG with a fantasy setting, Locojoy Games’ 2016 release Mystic Castle deserves a place on your radar. Initlally released back in March this year with iOS compatibility only, the title is now available for free on Android devices, with an exclusive week’s release of a free iOS version (20th – 27th May). Straddling a number of genres, the game touches on city building, adventure and simulation; not forgetting its predominant lean towards RPG.

The game unfolds with players adopting the role of alchemist, navigating the endless catacombs of a dangerous dungeon. Aiming to create your own underground city, players will face a wealth of different scenarios throughout the game, appearing in the guise of ‘events’ – be them skill progression, or gambling prospects.

Perfect for gamers who want a fully immersive game without the excessive commitment, Mystic Castle allows for strategic thinking and deep progression paths, but doesn’t bog players down with the need for consistent logging in or purchasing in-game add-ons. Game resources also restock whilst the app is out of use.

For those looking to expand their world within the game, there comes the prospect of purchasable expansion packs – over 500 areas spanning 10…

Defend against an evil human army in Monster Castle out now on iOS and Android

Monster Castle is a brand new mobile tower defence that just launched on iOS and Android, and includes a number of fresh twists on the genre.

The most notable of these is that you play as the monsters who have risen up and escaped imprisonment from the evil knight who captured them. So it’s up to you to rally them in defence against this knight and his nasty human army.

To do so, you’ll have to build a castle capable of pushing their forces back. This is made up of a variety of different buildings, some of which will need defending like the gold mine, wine barrel, and hero throne.

As you can expect, there are also offensive buildings like crossbows, cannons, and flamethrowers which will drastically increase your castle’s defence when placed.

You’ll also have to recruit a bunch of heroic monsters like warchilds, rock giants, and hellboxers, and you can level them up with an extensive skill tree to make them stronger.

The single player PvE mode includes a map full of levels to complete. The difficulty builds gradually over time so you’ll be kept on your toes for the entire duration.

There’s also global multiplayer where you can face off against an enemy player’s castle. If you manage to successfully destroy it, you’ll be rewarded with extra rewards and resources.

Alternatively, you can form an alliance with your friends and take part in monster clan wars, in which you cooperatively battle toge…

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Review (4/5)

Trying recapture past glories is a dangerous pursuit. Just because something worked for an audience 20 years ago, doesn’t mean it’s going to play to modern tastes. However, that hasn’t stopped Disney from taking another run its beloved platformer Castle of Illusion.

Originally released on consoles, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse draws inspiration from the 2D Mega Drive classic. Instead of a direct remake, however, this digital download is an all-new experience, featuring fresh visuals, 3D platforming sections, and seven chapters filled with surreal enemies and challenging bosses.

As a fan of the original, it was very easy to get swept away on a wave of calculated nostalgia. The controls are very basic: simply drag your left thumb back and forth to manouvre Mickey around the screen, and tap your right thumb to jump. Enemies are dispatched by hopping on their heads, and can also be used as springboards to reach higher objects and platforms.

While perfectly adequate for navigating the often punishing environments, the touch response does feel a little spongy. It’s also very easy to miss the tiny attack button, and leap foolishly into oncoming danger when you mean to throw an apple.

The three-act levels are relatively short, but contain a few portals and mini-games which make them worth repeating. Though the entire game can be bested in a couple of hours, we got held up by some of the boss battles, several of which we…
