Mobile gaming moments of 2017 – Everwing on a beach in Scotland

The end of the year is fast coming up, which means soon it’s going to be time to start creating content about the best games that have come out in the 12 months it’s taken the earth to perform one complete rotation around the fiery, living giving sun.

Obviously that’s going to happen on AppSpy, but I also want to try and do something a little different. I don’t want you to think about the best game you’ve played this year, or the game that you think is the most technically polished. I want you to think about the game that, for one reason or another, has meant the most to you.

It could be because you sunk hours into it over the year. It could be because it got you through some hard times. Hell, it could just be because it revived some glorious memories of happier times when you didn’t have to drag your carcass out of bed every day to go and do a job you hate.

Don’t worry though, I’ll start things off. I know you’re all a bit shy around these parts. Please though, if you want to share a story about your best iOS gaming moment in 2017, feel free to chuck some words in the comments section down below. It’ll be interesting to see what varied experiences we’ve had this year.

Everwing on a beach in Scotland

It was on a cold Edinburgh beach in the middle of January. There were some dogs running about doing ridiculous things, and my fingers weren’t really warm enough to play the game, but that didn’t stop me.

Why PUBG for mobile is a really bad idea

Well it’s Thursday, and usually I like to write some content on Thursday. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do. In fact, I’m doing it right now. Do you see? This is the content that I am creating for you. Consider yourselves blessed. Blessed by this wondrous content.

If you have even the slightest interest in videogames then you’ve probably heard people mentioning PUBG. In layman’s terms that’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a battle royale game that’s eating up time and money over on Steam.

There have been attempts to bring similar style games to mobile, and while there have been some valiant-ish attempts, none of them have really worked. And that got me thinking. And when I get to thinking I write things down. Things like this.

Why PUBG will never work on mobile

There are several things that a game like PUBG needs to work properly. Perhaps one of the most important of those is time. It’s the sort of game that people literally sink days into. I know. I have been to their houses. I have smelt them after a session.

And time isn’t something that mobile gaming really offers. Sure you can play for hours, but it’s not comfortable. Your phone is probably going to run out of battery. Someone at work is going to bash on the toilet cubicle door and ask what in the name of all that’s holy are you even doing in there.

Mobile games work better as smash and grab bites of entertainment. Or, if they’re going to try and ex…

Is Dreamworks Universe of Legends suitable for younger mobile gamers?

Have you ever wondered what a team-up between Po from Kung-fu Panda, a dragon from How to Train Your Dragon, and another character from a third Dreamworks property might look like? No? Me neither, but some people probably have, and they’re who I’m writing this content for.

That’s because Dreamworks: Universe of Legends came out last week. It’s a free to play casual RPG featuring heroes from a whole bunch of Dreamworks animation properties. And it’s quite a lot of fun, if you’re into that sort of thing.

But there are a few nooks and crannies that people who are unfamiliar with the genre might have trouble with, especially if they’re younger players. And since that’s pretty much who the game is aimed at, I thought I’d create some slick content looking at how you can get your little screen-pokers prepared to play the game.

What is it?

The game is an RPG. You’re building up a party of Dreamworks heroes, and trying to collect a bunch of crystal shards that Po has unwittingly released. He’s a bit of a silly one, that Po. The game is spread across a series of different worlds, some of which will be familiar to fans, and others that are inventions for the game.

The controls are pretty simple. You tap to move your group, and tap the creatures you want to attack. Your heroes will attack automatically, but you do have some input into what happens. When a super move is charged up, you can tap on one of the character portraits at…

Big Farm: Mobile Harvest puts you in charge of your very own plot of land

Big Farm: Mobile Harvest is the new version of Goodgame Studios’ farm simulator, previously only playable through browsers. Now you can grow your own farm into a thriving enterprise from your handheld device, without ever having to get muddy. Hooray!

You’ve just inherited some acres of land from your uncle George, and it’s your job to transform the plot, planting crops, hiring farmhands and rearing animals to turn this brownfield into a green and pleasant land.

Helping you along the way are Tessa and Benny, along with other cheerful local folk. They’ll give you advice and issue you quests to complete. You can form co-ops with other Big Farm: Mobile Harvest players online, too, exchanging tips and tricks.

The game prioritises strategy over action, and is all about growing your plot in a steady, sustainable way. Keep your workers happy to keep costs down and production high. Keep the animals happy to make a profit at market. Reuse bi-products like manure to make your land more fertile, and reinvest your resources into growing your farm into a success. Aside from regular quests, there are seasonal events to keep you entertained, including a Fairytale Festival and Halloween party to look forward to.

If all that farmyard fun sounds clucking brilliant, you can download Big Farm: Mobile Harvest for free now on …

The Monday Musing – What does E3 mean for mobile gaming?

Well it’s that time of the year again. The good and the great and the average of the gaming industry have gathered in Los Angeles to paste giant billboards on the side of buildings and get the hype trains started for the latest AAA releases.

But here at AppSpy we’re far more concerned with the mobile side of things. And that got the cogs in my brain whirring round something rotten. It made me wonder whether mobile gamers should even be that bothered about what’s going on at E3?

So I decided to write a piece of content about it. After all, content makes the world go round. Or at least I assume it does. It could be something to do with science, but I tend not to bother myself with such unimportant things as gravity and what not.

E3 – is it for me?

Look, the big publishers and developers are getting better at mobile. Take a look at Square Enix’s GO games, or Nintendo’s push into the medium with Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem: Heroes. But they’re still lagging behind plenty of other mobile-focused companies.

And that means the mobile reveals we see from E3 just aren’t that interesting at the moment. Sure there’s the occasional gem revealed at a press conference, but in a very real way the AAA gang know that the audience at E3 doesn’t really care about mobile games.

Think about it this way, it’s a place to show off as many explosions and shiny pixels as you possibly can. And that’s not something you really get wi…

Build and Manage a Maximum Security Prison!

Welcome to the latest update of Prison Architect: Mobile! The most important thing in this update is a crash fix that affected a lot of you and we reduced the Memory footprint, larger prisons should now run smoother!

Follow and Sack icons can no longer get stuck in the Bureaucracy view if you tap really fast
