The Monday Musing – What can we expect from King’s Call of Duty mobile game?

The big news over the last week has revolved around a job posting. Oh boo, you might say, that’s not that interesting, why don’t you go and write about something interesting Harry you useless sack of human garbage.

Well, when the job posting was on King’s website – yup, the developer behind Candy Crush, Bubble Witch, and a number of other puzzling mobile sagas – and it concerns Call of Duty – yup, the world’s foremost shooty bang bang man game – then I think it counts as interesting.

No, don’t worry, there’s no need to apologise, I’m used to the insults. Anyway, that’s what this week’s Monday Musing is all about. What can we expect from Candy Call of Duty Saga? Here are some ideas.

It’s not going to be a match-stuff puzzler

I mean, it’s just not going to be. I honestly can’t see how that would work, on any sort of level. Not just because matching guns to kill foreigners might be a little bit on the nose, but because the brand recognition that CoD brings doesn’t really tie in to that sort of genre.

And it’s that brand recognition that King-tivision is going to be banking on to, well, bank the big bucks it’s going to want to suck in from the franchise.

There will be action

I can’t imagine a CoD game without some sort of shooting. There was that CoD: Heroes game that was basically Clash of Clans with tanks and different moustaches, but I’m going to bet we can expect mor…

Why Facebook Messenger Games was the biggest thing to happen in mobile gaming in 2016

There’s an argument that the cultural value of a game can be defined not by the units it sells or the money it makes, but on the impact it has on the way we do things. In this case, on the way we play.

And that’s certainly what’s happened with the first raft of Facebook Messenger games. It’s not that they’ve given us any revolutionary gaming experiences, it’s that they’ve shifted the concept of play into a completely different sphere.

Essentially they’ve grasped two of the most important mobile gaming trends of the past couple of years – asynchronicity and social – and then wrapped them up inside the entrails of an app most of us use on a daily basis.

And that’s fundamentally changed the number of steps in the process of playing. It’s removed barriers that, while not exactly annoying, stood between anyone wanting to challenge their friends and seeing that dream come to fruition.

I’ve probably put considerable more time into the likes of Everwing and Words With Friends simply because they’re so easy to jump into. And you’re regularly notified when a friend beats you, while being pushed straight back into the app to try and rise to their challenge.

It’s an app that you’ve already got installed as well, and the games are easily reac…

The 5 best free to play mobile games of 2016

Well yesterday we had a look at the best premium games of the year, so now it’s time to look at the best free to play games. There are some proper corkers on this list, and you’d be silly not to play them.

I mean, you can not play them if you want, that’s really up to you, I’m just trying to create content that some people might be interested in. That’s basically my job. Okay?

Anyway, as per usual you can go to town on us in the comments if you think we’ve made any mistakes here. Just make sure you’re not too mean because we’re sensitive flowers and we’ll probably go and cry and not come back out until 2017.

Pokemon GO

Not just one of the best free to play games this year, one of the best games this year hands-down. Wander around, catch Pokemon, have a lovely old time.

It’s the sort of game that brings people together in the best possible way. And it’s constantly being updated. A mobile game that bridges so many gaps it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with it.

Disney Crossy Road

It’s Crossy Road, but it’s got Disney characters in it. And all of the settings are Disney settings. That might not sound like it’s that important, but when everything is presented with this much heart it really is.

Hop aroun…

The 5 best premium mobile games of 2016

It’s been a pretty good year for mobile gaming. And in this article we’re going to look at the 5 best premium games that have come out in the last twelve months. It might be a controversial list, but we’re like that here at AppSpy.

Tomorrow we’re going to have a look at the 5 best free to play games of the year, but right now we’re checking out the games that you have to chuck down money for before you get to do anything.

You might not agree with us, but that’s okay. And feel free to throw your own suggestions into the mix in the comments section at the bottom of the article. Go on, you know you want to.

Punch Club

A brilliant boxing simulator that takes you through the ins and outs of a boxer’s career. And not just the boxing. You’re dealing with training, working, eating, and all the rest of the things you need to do to keep alive.

You might get mugged, you might starve to death. There are lots of options, and a wicked sense of humour runs all the way through the experience.

Deus Ex GO

The third installment in the GO series, this one is set in the dystopian futuristic world of Deus Ex, and it’s probably the best out of the bunch.

It looks gorgeous, the puzzles are incredible, and you’ll be only too happy to waste a good few hours of yo…

The Monday Musing – The best Christmas gifts for the mobile gamer in your life

It’s Christmas. Well, it’s nearly Christmas. It sort of depends how you look at things. There’s definitely still time to get someone a Christmas present if that’s the sort of thing that you like doing with your time.

But what should you get the mobile gamer in your life? What gift could you possibly buy for someone who likes to spend all of their time with their nose buried in the likes of Clash of Clans?

Well, I don’t really know. But I’ve gone right ahead and put this list together anyway. There might be something on here that gamer would like. There might not be. Let’s get on with it and find out, yeah?

An iTunes gift card

You can’t really go wrong with this one. If the person’s got an iOS device and they like gaming, then getting them a gift card is basically an open goal.

You don’t have to choose anything specific for them, and they don’t have to awkwardly say thanks when you’ve got them something they don’t like.

A case

Nothing says personalisation like a case. And if there’s one thing that annoys a gamer it’s accidentally smashing their device to pieces before they’ve had a chance to complete a level.

So get a strong case that’ll make that expensive pocket computer unlikely to explode in a million extremely expensive pieces.

5 mobile games that would work brilliantly in VR

VR is big business nowadays. Because apparently everyone wants to strap some goggles to their face and open themselves up the very real danger of their friends stealing all of their stuff while they’re gaming.

Anyway, mobile VR is a thing as well. I’ve heard about it, I’ve used it, and damn it all I’m going to write a listy feature about it right now because I can’t think of anything else to write about. Also everyone’s talking about PlayStation VR. So that’s like a link I guess.

So here are some iPad and iPhone games that I’d like to be able to play with my eyes. Or something like that. I don’t know it’s been a very long day.

AG Drive

Basically I want to play AG Drive in VR because I’m pretty sure it’d make me vomit. So actually I want other people to play AG Drive in VR. Preferably not in my house, because then they’d vomit on my house.

Anyway this is pretty much Wipeout, so you’ll be swooshing around big scary tracks in an anti-gravity rocket racer. And vomiting. So much vomiting.

Infinity Blade II

You know what, this one might actually work. Swinging your arms around like a dork to hack and slash massive towering monsters to pieces. And the monsters actually are massive and towering.

Sure you might smash u…
