7 classic sci-fi movies available on iTunes right now

Star Trek Beyond is out now at the cinema. Have you seen it yet? Either way, celebrate with some fantastic films on the iTunes store!

It’s the 50th anniversary of Star Trek this year and the latest big screen instalment, Star Trek Beyond, hits the cineplexes this month. That’s awesome news for every sci-fi fan out there. Such an iconic series needs an equally emblematic build-up before you watch it, and that’s why we found our seven favourite films that, just like Star Trek, are quintessential in defining the genre.

You can find any of these films on Apple’s movie store right now, so you can pick up your iPad or iPhone and rent them this minute. What are you waiting for? Warp factor 10 to iTunes!

The Matrix (1999)

One of the most iconic films of the late 1990s, The Matrix gave us kung-fu fighting crossed with hyperrealist cyberpunk thrills – wrapped up in iconic ‘bullet-time’ special effects. Set in a world where things are not what they seem, hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) discovers that what he knows as reality is just a mind game when he’s contacted by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and his techno-revolutionaries. Mobile phones may have moved on in the last 17 years, but the fight scenes will still raise your blood pressure.

Hands-on with Sentinel 4: Dark Star, the sci-fi tower defence game for iPhone and iPad

The tower defence genre has quietened down a little over recent months and years, but for a while there you couldn’t browse through any of the “top games” lists on the various app stores without running into one.

Sentinel 4: Dark Star is the long-awaited sequel to much-loved tower defence game Sentinel 3: Homeworld, which came out way back in 2010.

And even though the build I went hands-on with for this preview video was early, it’s shaping up like it’s definitely going to please the hardcore fans of the genre.

Massive sci-fi adventure Out There warping onto the App Store this month

Ambitious space-based exploration sim Out There is due to warp onto the App Store later this month.

The aim of this “dark and melancholic” adventure to build a ship capable of intergalactic travel, and then roam in the universe is search of resources, confrontations, and civilisations composed entirely of sentient, bipedal acorns.

Probably not that last one.

According the preview conducted by sister site Pocket Gamer, there’s plenty to get excited about. There’s a hefty plot, a ridiculously large expanse of space in which to boldly go, and the promise of diplomatic misunderstandings with alien species.

Check out the trailer below and see what you think. If you like what you see, keep your eyes trained on AppSpy around the end of February for an updated release date.
