How did a Cuphead knock off make it on to the App Store?

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a flagrant rip off landing on the App Store. But yesterday we all got a bit excited because we thought that Cuphead, a gorgeous looking 2D shooter that has been wowing players on Xbox and Steam, had come out on iOS.

That wasn’t the case though. It was an elaborate scam. The app was £4.99, and at first glance it looked legit. The developer was right, there was a website, and the screenshots certainly suggested that Cuphead had miraculously made its way to the App Store.

The game wasn’t up for long though. The developers made it known it was by no-means an official port, and before the day was up it had been deleted from listings. If you spent any money on it, then I’m sorry. You got done. But it did raise a pretty big question, namely –

How in the world did this happen!?!

There are meant to be things in place to stop clones and copies making their way onto Apple’s platform. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that these systems didn’t kick in like they were supposed to yesterday, but is there more to the story than that? A simple oversight that was quickly rectified?

Pong. An icon featuring Superman riding a motorbike. Real Top Speed Car Racing. The Battle Quest. Flappy Mole (seriously, what?). Cookie Mania Crush (and Juice Crush Splash 2, Jelly Cake Crush 3, and Jelly Candy Sweet Mania 3). Another icon for a sniper game that shows a bald assassin in a suit peering down a scope…

Inner Circle now available on the App Store

Like puzzle titles? Like snazzy graphics and an addictive soundtrack to boot? ZPlay’s latest release, Inner Circle, provides just those things for the mass market, with a brand new release that appeals to gamers, young and old. Think of it as a 21st Century Tetris upgrade, if you will.

Since their start in 2010, ZPlay have attracted an impressive following of more than 400 million users worldwide as well as earning top 10 rankings for many of their titles.

The main idea behind the game is to ensure that the varying colours of the outer ring align with those of the ‘inner circle’, before said outer ring comes into contact with the inner one. Winning is achieved by tapping the screen to rotate the circle, then swiping to ensure that it shrinks as soon as possible, garnering more points.

This becomes increasingly difficult as you progress through the game’s 250 levels, which vary in cognitive ability and speed settings, keeping you on your toes throughout.

Additional quirky features include an Arcade mode that allows for indefinite gameplay for true veterans of the title, and a night-mode that protects eyes from the brightness by altering the colour scheme to suit different lighting.

The game can currently be downloaded for free from the App Store for your Apple devices. See how far you can get without this title driving you literally around the bend.

Game Craft’s Legend of War lands in App Store and Google Play

If you’re looking for a title that encompasses the two different worlds of strategy and skill, Game Craft’s new release, Legend of War, is definitely worth spending an afternoon with. Whether it’s waging war on opposing legions or forging your own empire, there’s plenty to get stuck into.

We spoke to the developers following the game’s release:

What were your inspirations behind Legend of War?

“Here at Game Craft, we love Clash of Clans for mobile, and Total War on PC, meaning that a Total War-esque experience for mobile was at the top of our priorities. With some of the same strategy elements behind it, yet on a smaller, more bitesized scale, we incorporated elements of both games.”

With regards to design, what is your preferred unique mechanic within the title?

“We have a unique catapult firing system that has probably never been seen before in a strategy game. It is a pull, aim and release system that adds an exciting element of skill to a strategy game.”

What do you think your game offers that you can’t get from any other title on the App Store/Google Play?

“Most games on mobile either revolve around turn-taking or smaller-scale battles. We strive to provide a…
